What Changes When the Unit Will Meet a Typhoon

Design to the site's basic wind speed from the national wind map, anchor every corner to a designed foundation, protect glazing with shutters or laminated glass, secure roof edges and penetrations, and provide a documented pre-storm procedure for the occupants.
Container modules have survived direct typhoon exposure in the Philippines and cyclone exposure in northern Australia — but only when they were anchored, when the openings were protected, and when the roof was detailed to keep water out under uplift. The failures that make the news are almost always unanchored units, unbraced additions and carports and awnings that were never engineered.
Four things that decide performance
- Anchorage. The unit must be tied to a foundation designed for uplift, not just for gravity. Every corner, plus intermediate points on long sides, with anchor capacity calculated from the wind load.
- Openings. Windows and doors are where pressure enters. Shutters, laminated or tempered glazing, and frames rated for the design pressure — not standard domestic windows.
- Roof edges and penetrations. Uplift concentrates at edges and corners. Mechanical fixing at close centres, sealed washers, and no unsealed duct or flue penetration.
- Attachments. Awnings, carports, stair canopies and signage are the first things to leave. Either engineer them to the same wind load or make them removable before the season.
Site-specific inputs
- Basic wind speed for the site from the national wind map, not a regional average
- Exposure category — open coast, built-up, or sheltered — which changes the pressure coefficients
- Topography: a ridge or a headland increases speed locally
- Whether the unit is in a designated cyclone/typhoon zone for permitting purposes
Pre-storm procedure
Write it down and give it to the camp manager, because it will be used at night with limited time:
- Close and latch shutters; check every window latch
- Remove loose items from around the units — drums, pallets, signage, gas cylinders
- Confirm water and power isolation points, and switch off non-essential circuits
- Move occupants to the designated refuge module, which should be the one with the fewest openings and the most anchors
- After the storm: inspect anchors, roof fixings and glazing before reoccupation
Insurance and documentation
Insurers ask for the design wind speed, the anchor design and the installation record. A project that can produce those three documents is insurable at a normal rate; one that cannot is either refused or priced for the risk. Keep the calculations with the as-built drawings.
