Can container houses be stacked?

Need this answered for your project? Send the site location and quantity — you get a written answer and a quotation.
Short answer

Yes, container houses can be stacked, typically up to two or three storeys, provided the corner castings and structural frame are engineered for the imposed loads. Stacking transfers vertical and lateral forces through corner castings, so the manufacturer must confirm load ratings, bracing and stair modules, and a qualified engineer should sign off the configuration.

Standards & references

  • ISO 668 — Series 1 freight containers: classification, dimensions and ratings (the dimensional basis for 20FT / 40FT modules).
  • ISO 1496-1 — Series 1 freight containers: specification and testing, used as the reference for corner castings and lifting points.
  • ISO 9001 — quality management system; inspection records and test reports are issued per order.
  • IEC 60364 — low-voltage electrical installations, applied to the cabin wiring layout supplied with each unit.
  • EN 1090-1 — execution of steel structures; can be specified when the destination market requires a declared execution class.
