Modular Clinic and First Aid Post: Layout, Services and Compliance
Quick answer

A first aid post needs a triage and treatment room, a separate examination or isolation space, a dirty utility area for waste and cleaning, hand-wash at every patient point, backup power for the fridge and lighting, and a records cabinet that locks.

Remote camps are legally required to provide medical cover in most jurisdictions, and the standard is usually set by the client's health and safety regime or the national labour code. A container module is a legitimate way to deliver it, provided the layout follows patient flow rather than room count.

Services that decide whether it works

  • Water: hand-wash at every patient point, hot water to the clinical sink, and a dedicated clinical waste sink that is not shared with cleaning.
  • Power: a dedicated circuit, backup for lighting and the vaccine/medicine fridge, and sockets on the UPS side. Losing the cold chain is a clinical incident, not an inconvenience.
  • Ventilation: mechanical extract in the isolation bay and the dirty utility; openable windows are not enough where the climate keeps them shut.
  • Data: network or 4G for telemedicine and records, plus a lockable cabinet for paper files where the connection is unreliable.
  • Access: a turning area for an ambulance or a 4x4, a ramp at the entrance, and a door wide enough for a stretcher.

Clean and dirty separation

The single most common design fault is a single corridor serving everything, which means clean dressings and soiled waste share a route. Provide two paths: staff and clean supplies enter one way, waste and soiled linen leave another. In a two-module layout this is achieved by putting the dirty utility at the far end with its own external door.

Compliance questions to settle early

  1. Which authority sets the standard — labour ministry, health ministry, or the client's own HSE policy?
  2. Is a registered nurse required on site, and does the post need to be staffed 24 hours?
  3. What clinical waste contract exists, and how often is waste collected?
  4. Is the unit classified as temporary or permanent for permitting purposes?

Sizing guide

For a camp of 200 to 500 workers, a two-module post (roughly 30 to 40 m²) with triage, treatment, isolation and utility is the usual provision. Above 500, add an examination room and a dedicated pharmacy store; above 1,000, the client is normally into a permanent clinic building with container modules used only as overspill.

FAQ

How many modules does a site clinic need?
Typically two 20ft or one 40ft module for a camp of 200 to 500 workers, with triage, treatment, isolation and a dirty utility.
Does a clinic module need backup power?
Yes — at minimum for lighting, the medicine fridge and communications. Cold-chain failure is treated as a clinical incident in most HSE regimes.
Can a container clinic be used permanently?
It can, but permanent use usually triggers building permit and healthcare facility standards that a standard module does not meet without upgrade.
