Turning Container Modules Into Classrooms and Training Rooms
Updated 2026-11-01 · JIUJIAN GLOBAL technical team
Allow 1.5 to 2 m² per learner, provide mechanical ventilation for at least 8 litres per second per person, control reverberation with soft finishes, and get daylight in from at least two sides to avoid a single dark end.
Classrooms and training rooms are among the most common container conversions on mining, construction and aid projects, and the ones where a standard office module is most often ordered unchanged. Three things then go wrong: the room is stuffy by mid-morning, the speaker cannot be heard at the back, and the far end feels like a corridor.
Space and seating
| Layout | Area per person | Fits in a 40ft module |
|---|---|---|
| Classroom rows | 1.2–1.5 m² | About 20–24 learners |
| U-shape | 2.0–2.5 m² | About 12–14 |
| Cabaret / group tables | 2.0–2.5 m² | About 12–16 |
| Practical / workshop | 3.0 m²+ | 8–10 |
Ventilation is the design driver
A sealed box with 20 people in it reaches high CO₂ within an hour, and the symptom is a class that loses attention after the first break. Provide mechanical ventilation sized on occupancy, not on room volume alone, and make sure there is a make-up air path. Where air conditioning is used, specify fresh-air intake rather than recirculation only.
Acoustics
- Hard panels, hard floor and a metal ceiling produce a long reverberation time and poor speech clarity
- Add absorption: acoustic ceiling tiles, carpet or rubber flooring, and curtains on glazed walls
- Face-to-face rooms in adjacent modules need acoustic separation — a shared wall of single-skin panel transmits speech
- Workshop training needs impact noise control, which is better solved by separating the practical area into its own module
Daylight and layout
Put glazing on two opposing walls if the module is a full 40ft, or on the long side plus one end. A single glazed end gives a bright end and a gloomy end, and the seating has to follow it. Where privacy or security matters, use high-level glazing instead of losing the daylight entirely.
Services and equipment
A dedicated circuit for the projector and screens, socket outlets on more than one wall, and cable management along the skirting rather than across the floor. For IT training, plan the network, the switch position and the UPS before the module is built — retrofitting a server cabinet into a container is where conversions become expensive.
Compliance notes
Where the room is used for children, escape routes, door widths and fire alarm provision come under the local education standard rather than the camp standard. Confirm which applies before ordering; the difference is usually a second exit door and a fire-rated partition.
